Tanning Guidelines

Very Important - Please Read Before Tanning

(The following are revised excerpts from the book "The UV Advantage" – Michael F. Holick, Ph. D. MD. 2003
and the International Smart Tan Network Indoor Tanning Guidelines)

Use common sense and practice moderation. (It is not recommended that you tan daily. Damage to skin can be caused by overexposure – not just by burning) Follow recommended tanning guidelines to ensure your smartest tan.

Using lotions flattens the very top layer of skin and increases the penetration of much of the UVA and UVB rays that would otherwise be reflected off the skin. Using such products allows you to cut your UV exposure by 30-50%. (Please use indoor tanning lotions only – other lotions will cause damage to the bed acrylic and will not give you the ultimate benefits of a recommended lotion.)

Other benefits of using tanning lotions include:
Protect skin during tanning process; prevent loss of moisture, elasticity & collagen; provide protein & lipid oxidation; increase tan intensity & accelerate tan; body can metabolize vitamins put on skin. Please note that the higher priced creams have more beneficial ingredients in higher concentration.

Wear goggles (Overexposure to UV is unhealthy for your eyes) (If you do not have your own, we do sell them here $5-7.00 or you may borrow ours)

Consider your medical history. If you are being treated for lupus or tend to get cold sores, these conditions can be worsened through exposure to UV radiation from indoor tanning lamps, just as they are by natural sunlight. Your skin may be more sensitive to UV radiation if you take certain medications such as antibiotics, antihistamines, tranquilizers, water pills, diuretics, or birth control pills. Reduce exposure time initially if you are taking any of these medications and increase time gradually.

Pregnant women should not use tanning beds. Anyone with a history of skin cancer will require a doctor’s note to tan.
